Epoxy Information

The range of possibilities for epoxy materials is virtually unlimited. From seamless decorative flooring to heavy industrial or infrastructure repairs of flooring, to highway bridge decks, the variety of applications really exceeds the awareness of most people.

The word "epoxy" is used so often, you would guess that there would be a good understanding of what it is and how it can be used.

However, I have not found that to be the case. With that in mind, here are some observations and comments about epoxy that may be helpful to you.

Myth: Epoxy is epoxy.

Fact: All epoxy is not the same. There are many types of epoxy used for different applications. There are wide differences in the quality of epoxies.

In general, just the presence of the word "epoxy" in a product name is NOT a guarantee of any performance characteristic. Actually, it seems the word is commonly used as a marketing ploy to sell products by giving people a false sense of security based on the word.

For example, many believe that epoxy "paint" performs better than "ordinary" paint. While this CAN be the case, just the word on a label is not an assurance of it.

Similarly with flooring materials of epoxy. There is a HUGE difference in quality and performance characteristics even though peoples' perception seems to be that "epoxy is epoxy" and the word must mean something specific.

The main point of this observation: Buyer beware and do your due diligence. Under the name of "epoxy" you will find high quality, medium quality and poor quality products.

Myth: Just because it says "epoxy" it will stick better to concrete.

Fact: Surface preparation is exceedingly important for epoxy application, just as it is for every type of material that is placed on concrete. Inadequate surface preparation will cause premature failure of the best epoxy materials in the world.

There are NO magical silver bullets. The success and performance of all materials applied to concrete are heavily dependent upon proper surface preparation. To date, there are no materials available that eliminate the need for thorough surface prep.

Failures in coatings, including all epoxies, can be traced to factors such as improper preparation, including moisture issues, or quality of products, or application techniques.

FACT: It is very difficult and time consuming to sort through all the information required to ensure that you get the desired results from epoxies...whether it is for your home, a restaurant floor, hospital operating room, animal care facility or industrial plants or warehouses.

Myth: There are many manufacturers of epoxy in the U.S.

FACT: There are just a handful of companies that actually manufacture epoxies. While some will debate this issue, there are really only about five. Everyone else is just a formulator, reformulator or private labeler.
